4 Ways to Include Non Traditional Wedding Ideas In Your Wedding

July 22, 2024

Ok, babes, today I am sharing some of my most favorite non traditional wedding ideas ever! Have you ever gone to a wedding and thought “Wow! That was so THEM!”. Well, that’s exactly what a wedding should feel like. A day that represents the couple and is true to who they are. While there is nothing wrong with traditional wedding ideas, there is so much more to your story and those are the things I want you to focus on. So, keep scrolling because in this blog I’m diving into four ways you can create the non traditional wedding of your dreams!

How to Incorporate Non Traditional Wedding Ideas In Your Day

Start With Your Location

Instead of checking out all the local wedding venues, why not get creative and find some non traditional wedding venues? Is viewing art your favorite pastime? Then consider holding your wedding at a museum or art gallery. Or maybe you love spending time with family and imagine a low-key day surrounded by all your loved ones. There are lots of Airbnbs that are not only perfect for hosting small gatherings but are also surrounded by incredible scenery. Or maybe a city hall wedding followed by a reception dinner at your favorite restaurant is more your jam. Whatever you decide, know there are so many possibilities for where to hold your wedding.

Put a Twist on Your Wedding Party

Wedding parties are starting to look a lot different than they have in years past and your girl is here for it!! There are so many non traditional wedding ideas to consider for your wedding party from gradient color themes to non-matching attire and everything in between.

Maybe you like the idea of having your best friends surrounding you on your wedding day, but you aren’t completely sold on the idea of having them stand with you at the altar. Well, there is a solution for that too! One option is to have your chosen people wear a certain color and enjoy the day’s activities with you but then sit with the guests during the ceremony and reception. This allows you to enjoy some moments of the day with your favorite people nearby, while still keeping some moments for just you and your partner. Other alternative wedding party ideas can be to have a mixed wedding party consisting of all genders or no wedding party at all! You do you, babes!

Choose a Unique Wedding Outfit (or Two)

Your wedding party people aren’t the only ones who can wear unique wedding outfits. When it comes to choosing your own wedding attire, the options are endless! From colored dresses to pantsuits to cultural outfits there are tons of options to choose from no matter how you identify. The most important thing is that you wear something you are comfortable with and that expresses your unique personality!

But don’t stop there. Why wear one wedding outfit when you can wear two? I’ve seen couples choose to wear more traditional attire for their ceremony and then change into something more unique for their reception. Wearing multiple outfits gives you even more chances to express your personality (plus, who doesn’t love to dress up?)!

Consider Your Guest Experience

Your wedding wouldn’t be complete without guests to help you celebrate (unless you’re eloping) and a great way to say thank you is to include thoughtful touches throughout the day. Some ideas to help you think outside the box are:

  • Instead of the regular pre-made favors, why not hire a live wedding painter to create watercolor portraits of each guest? Not only will your guests have a memento to remember the day by, but they’ll also get a beautiful piece of artwork they can enjoy.
  • Rent a photo booth for your reception or post-wedding party. These days, there are so many elevated photo booth options that take the term “photo booth” to the next level!

Other Non Traditional Wedding Ideas

Here are even more non traditional wedding ideas you can include in your day.

  • Do a first look with your partner, your grandparents, your children, your dog or anyone else you’d like
  • Read private vows before or after your ceremony
  • Walk down the aisle together
  • Plant a tree
  • Rent a food truck for your reception
  • Plan group activities for everyone to enjoy

Above All, Curate a Day that Reflects You

Recently, I was at an event where we talked a lot about wedding trends that were fading in and out and it just reinforced my belief that wedding days are so much more than a photoshoot! It’s easy to see trendy photos on Pinterest, yet lose the heart behind the designs.

I believe weddings are all about creating intentional moments and having a day filled with people and details that reflect who you and your partner are. It is absolutely ok to save your money on things that don’t call to your hearts. Just because you’ve seen it done doesn’t mean it’s something you NEED to do. There are lots of ways to get married and the best way is YOUR way!

I hope these non traditional wedding ideas got your mind flowing around what’s possible because truly, the sky is the limit!
